The driver is no doubt one of the most fun clubs to hit in the game of golf. Getting the most distance from it can be a challenge and requires an understanding of what actually causes the ball to go further. In order to hit the ball really far you need to learn to generate high club head speeds combined with launching the ball at the right angle and also with the right kind of spin.
Select an appropriate driver:
The first thing is to ensure that you have a driver that is matched for your swing type. If you have the ability to generate high club head speeds over 110 mph then you need to consider a driver with around 9 to 9.5 degrees of loft and a stiff shaft. If you have less club head speed than that then you should look a driver with 10 to 10.5 degrees of loft and a regular flex shaft. A lot of beginners tend to stand too far away from the ball with their arms extended out, you want to instead stand a little closer to the ball and there should be a small angle between the shaft and your arms. This will promote a steeper club head path which is ideal for making the most solid contact with the ball and generating the most ball speed.
If you watch golf on television you will notice many smaller players hitting the ball a very long way. The way they accomplish this is by capitalizing on lag or leverage. You do not need to be very muscular in order to hit the ball far however it does help to have strong wrist muscles. Go to the gym and train with weights by doing wrist curls to strengthen them. The concept of lag in golf involves trying to release the club at the last possible moment. Using the dominant hand too much in the swing can result in poor lag and casting the club which will definitely cause loss of club head speed and distance. One way to avoid this is make sure your dominant hand is gripping the club very lightly and use your other hand to initiate the backswing and downswing motions. Think of pulling the club with the left hand if you are right handed as this will promote the right club path and proper leverage.
