If you aim a rifle away from the target, you can't expect the bullet to go where you want it to right? If you aim your golf club away from the target, you can't expect the ball to go where you want it to can you?
The fact is that the vast majority of golfers fail to setup their body and club in a way that relates to the target and allows their mind and body to move in a consistent way and send the ball to the target. In this article we are mainly focussed on getting the club face setup "Square" to your intended target.
If you ever want to see how bad golfers are at this get hold of a "Club Face Indicator" which is a magnetic device that sticks on your clubface and shows exactly where the clubface is pointed. Then take bets with every golfer you can find that they cannot line their club up directly to the target. You are going to win 99% of those bets and make a lot of money. Most will be aiming left. (opposite for left hand golfers)
I am not going to go into detail here about ball compression and point of separation of ball from clubface, which dictates that the clubface be slightly open at the first point of contact between ball and clubface but if you compress the ball a lot or are a low/single figure or scratch player you should look into advanced targeting of the clubface.
First stand directly behind the ball on a direct line toward your intended target. Now pick a small spot on the ground 6 to 8 inches on front of the ball which is on the ball to target line. Memorise this position. This little target in front of your ball we call the intermediate target.
Go through your normal routine and as you walk into the ball, keep note of the spot you picked. You can easily draw a "mental line" going from the middle of your ball to the small target you decided on, the intermediate target. Remember this line is referred to as the" ball to target line".
Place your clubface down immediately behind the ball so that the clubface is 90 degrees to the ball to target line. NOTE: Use the leading edge or the bottom line on your clubface to determine when the clubface is 90 degrees to the target line. NEVER use the top edge of the club.
Keep the clubface 90 degrees to the ball to target line and then settle into your stance. Make sure that while you are settling into your stance that the clubface remains "Square" to the target. We say the clubface is Square to the target when it is 90 degrees to the ball to target line.
When settling into your stance you should also get your toes, knees, hips, shoulders and eye line all parallel to the ball to target line.
