How A Proper Golf Setup Position Promotes Better Golf Swing Balance

Balance in the golf swing is very helpful for a couple of reasons. Good balance is related to power and it will lead to hitting the ball farther. A swing in proper balance can generate way more power which leads to increased distance. Good balance in the swing also helps with better ball striking and more consistency.

To maintain good balance, it's important to start out with a proper setup position. The golf stance should be about shoulder width apart for most full swing shots. With the driver, it is helpful to have your stance just slightly wider than shoulder width. It is important to have your feet the proper distance apart because it will help to promote better balance in the golf swing. A good stance gives a stable base around which you can swing and turn. A stance which is too wide or too narrow can tend to make a golfer's swing get off balance. With a stance too narrow it will be difficult to generate enough power to hit the ball far. And if the stance is too wide, a sway or lateral motion may develop which will lead to poor balance.

Being the correct distance away from the golf ball will also contribute to having a balanced swing. If a golfer stands too close to the ball, it will cause them to get jammed up at impact and mis-hits can happen much more easily. And if the golfer is too far away, they can tend to lose their balance also. It's important to maintain good posture throughout the entire swing. Any time a golfer stands up or dips down with their body, the relationship between where the club is and how it comes back through the ball will be different and this will inhibit consistent ball striking.

Keeping the knees bent is also an important key in the golf swing setup which will help balance. This might seem obvious to bend the knees in the setup, but it's important to bend them the correct amount and then maintain that same amount of knee bend throughout the golf swing. At the top of the backswing, the right knee should be bent exactly the same amount that is was at the setup position. Also, bending the knees the right amount helps to get the weight in the balls or center of the feet which is a huge key to good balance. Having the weight too far back in the heels or too far forward up near the toes will lead to getting off balance in the golf swing.

Great balance leads to better golf shots and helps keep the swing on the correct path more naturally. Monitor these setup keys and you'll be making better swings and lowering your golf scores.
