One way to add consistency to tour golf game, is to develop a pre-shot routine. This is something that few golfers do. And all though it may seem like an insignificant thing, it's something that can really help your game. It's a method to develop the routine that will encourage you to constantly do the right things like your alignment to the ball and so on. The per-shot routine will also help you to focus on the task at hand, your golf game. It's helps prepare you not only physically to play golf, but mentally as well.
Here are a few ideas about things to do that will help you develop your own pre-shot routine.
1) stand behind the ball, and in your mind, visualize the shot that you want to take.
2) once you've determined your target line, position yourself parallel to it, and place your club head behind the ball square to the target
3) look at the target again and picture your shot
4) relax your arms and wiggle the club around a bit
5) again, look at the target, visualize your shot and breathe out
6) Take the shot
Watch professional golfers, although their pre-shot routines are not identical, they all have one, and they all use it on a consistent basis. There is nothing to terribly technical about having and practicing a routine, it's there to help you with both the physical and mental aspects of the swing, and can be modified to suit the individual golfer.
What is imperative however, is that you do the same thing every time you take a shot. The routine will develop consistency in your game, and this will lower your scores. You need to do it until you reach the point that it becomes instinctive. You do it without even thinking about it. And it doesn't matter where you are, on the course or the practice range, stick to the routine.
