The driver is one of the most fun clubs to hit and most people like to spend most of their practice time with this club. It is important however to have a strong foundation if you want to be a good driver of the golf ball. If your short game is solid for instance then you will not fear stepping up to the tee with a driver and you will not put excessive pressure on yourself since you know that even if you occasionally miss you have a good short game that can help you recover most of the time.

The key to hitting the ball seemingly effortlessly with great distance is to learn to take advantage of lag. The pros know all about it and this is how short, skinny guys still manage to pound 300 yard plus drives right down the middle of the fairway. However if your goal is to hit 300 yard drives then you need to understand that you must have a base level of strength and athleticism to pull it off as you must be able to generate at least 110-20 mph club head speeds.
Leverage or lag is holding the angle between the club and the left arm (for right handed players) as long as possible before releasing it. It is important to understand the concept however do not think of it consciously when making the swing. Instead learn to remember the feel that a swing with good lag has, one tip to generate more lag is to think of the club as a whip so use a motion similar to whipping a club and you should get more lag. Another tip is to hold the club still at the top of the swing and then make your lateral lower body movement towards the target first before bringing the club down. This will load the club at the top of the swing and stores more energy so you will be able to generate more club head speed through impact.
