Tips To Hit The Driver Further
We all love hitting the driver however we also know that hitting long drives consistently can be a great challenge. The driver is the longest club in the bag and requires the best swing mechanics in order to hit well regularly. Here are a few tips to help you learn to master this club better:
Tip 1: Pick the correct driver for your swing type
If your swing speed is under 100mph then you will want a driver with more loft (at least 10.5 degrees) and a less stiff shaft either a senior or regular flex. If you have a higher club head speed then go for something with less loft around 8.5 to 9.5 degrees and a stiff or ultra stiff shaft for maximum distance. Also try to stick with a proper length driver, something around 43 to 45 inches should work best for most people. A driver that is too long will be very difficult to hit accurately on a consistent basis.
Tip 2: Develop a powerful leg drive
Your hips and lower body can be a huge source of power. Be sure to drive strongly with your hips using a lateral instead of rotational shift towards the target. Do various leg related exercises with weights in the gym to strengthen this area such as the leg press or squat.
Tip 3: Take advantage of leverage
Many of the biggest hitters know the importance of using leverage to drive the ball further. The question is how do you build greater leverage into your golf swing. One tip is to avoid using your right hand (if you are a right handed golfer) too much during the downswing. The right hand should remain passive and instead think of pulling the club with the left hand instead. This will help to prevent an early release also known as casting which can cost you significant distance on the course.
Tip 4: Maintain good balance
If you are always losing your balance then this is a sign that you are trying to swing too hard so maybe back off a little to ensure that most of your swings are well balanced.
Tip 5: Transfer your weight fully
Failing to transfer your weight completely to the left side can cost you distance so be sure to finish each driver swing with your weight fully transferred to the left side. Click here for more tips on how to shoot lower scores.
